Biografia
John McLaughlin (nacido el 4 de enero de 1942), también Mahavishnu John McLaughlin, es un guitarrista de jazz extremadamente habilidoso nacido en Yorkshire, Inglaterra.John McLaughlin es uno de los más grandes guitarristas de la historia del Jazz y el Rock (considerado por muchos conocedores el mejor), y su primera banda, Mahavishnu Orchestra, ocupa dentro de ésta un sitial de honor, a pesar de su breve existencia.

Reconocido como el grupo fusión predominante, la Mahavishnu Orchestra fue considerada por muchos observadores durante sus inicios como una banda de rock, pero sus sofisticadas improvisaciones colocaron su poderosa música entre el rock y el jazz. La historia de esta legendaria agrupación, que fue como una estrella fugaz en el inmenso firmamento engendrado del bing bang musical ocurrido a finales de los 60’s, y que brilló con una intensidad inusitada durante su breve existencia de 5 años, está estrechamente ligada a la de su líder y fundador.
McLaughlin, nacido en 1942, arribó a Estados unidos procedente de Gran Bretaña a principios de 1969, siendo conocido solo en un selecto círculo de músicos y admiradores. A finales de ese año, era internacionalmente aclamado como intérprete. Al llegar se unió a un nuevo trío liderado por el prodigioso y talentoso Miles Davis y el baterista Tony Williams. Su contribución como músico y coautor en la banda fue determinante en la creación de un nuevo mundo musical, donde se fusionaba la exigente improvisación del jazz con el Rock’n’Roll, terrenos donde ninguna otra banda se había adentrado. Los dos años siguientes fueron de actividad sísmica musical, en el que se produjeron dos álbumes: In A Silent Way y Bitches Brew. Con esa experiencia y conocimientos adquiridos a cuestas, y su talento inigualable, John Mc Laughlin formó en 1971 la Mahavishnu Orchestra.

En esa época era discípulo del gurú hindú Sri Chinmoy, quien le antepuso el nombre de Mahavishnu. La primera formación, considerada la mejor de todas, estaba integrada además por Billy Cobham (batería y percusión), Jerry Goodman (violín), Jan Hammer (teclados) y Rick Laird (bajo).
Al poco tiempo la banda estaba tocando en grandes escenarios y estadios, con las bandas de rock de teloneros, y una audiencia de jazz y rock que respondía con éxtasis y admiración a un virtuosismo desgarrador, ensambles vertiginosos, pasajes tranquilos y relajantes, y melodías atonales y en clave menor, tomadas en gran parte de la India. Esta formación grabó durante 1971-73 tres intensos álbumes en estudio para la Columbia, y uno de los más potentes álbumes en vivo de todos los tiempos: Between Nothingness And Eternity. En el tercer disco, Love, Devotion And Surrender, McLaughlin colaboró con Devadish Carlos Santana, otro discípulo de Sri Chinmoy. Entonces, en un giro inesperado, McLaughlin reformó completamente la banda creando una segunda versión de ésta en 1974, con el violinista Jean-Luc Ponti, Gayle Moran (teclados y voz), el bajista Ralphe Amstrong y el baterista Narada Michael Warden, grabando dos álbumes. En 1975 Stu Goldberg remplazó a Moran y Ponti abandonó el grupo. Esta última encarnación de la banda grabó el célebre álbum Inner Worlds, antes del colapso definitivo, motivado por el acercamiento cada vez mayor de McLaughlin a la religión hindú y a la guitarra acústica. En 1975, McLaughlin formó con el violinista hindú Leo Shankar (hijo del celebre Ravi Shankar, maestro de la cítara) el quinteto acústico Shatki, estableciendo conexiones entre estilos acústicos y música de influencia hindú. Posteriormente, aún en la onda acústica, incursionó en el world music, particularmente en el flamenco-jazz, con el más celebre trío de guitarra que haya existido, incluyendo a Al Di Meola (Return To Forever) y Paco De Lucía.
Luego de girar y grabar con este trío, formó un dueto con la pianista Katia Labeque y grabó un disco solista en el que se reencontró con la guitarra eléctrica. Entonces, en 1984, surgió lo inevitable: renació la legendaria Mahavishnu Orchestra, con Cobham, el saxofonista Bill Evans, el tecladista Michael Forman, el bajista Jonas Hellborg y el percusionista Danny Gottlieb, grabando el último álbum de la banda: Mahavishnu, editado por la Warner Brother. Este intento de revivir las glorias pasadas fracasó, debido al escenario de mediocridad musical que invadió la década de los 80’s, impidiendo el desarrollo de la música virtuosa. A partir de entonces, John McLaughlin se dedicó a sus trabajos solistas, entre ellos el John McLaughlin Trio, colaboraciones con músicos de Jazz, y más recientemente la reunión del trio McLaughlin-Di Meola-De Lucia.
una de las cosas que más llama la atención de este hombre es que es completamente autodidacta, y además compone también líneas para piano, no sólo centra la composición en la guitarra.
Esta considerado por la élite del Jazz como uno de los mejores guitarristas jazz-fusión de la historia y un gran divulgador de este estilo.

Asímismo John McLaughlin es una persona muy cordial que siempre ha gustado de participar en todo cuanto le han propuesto, principalmente jam sessions y temas conjuntos. Algunas de sus participaciones más reseñadas, aparte del famoso trío, son con Chick Korea, Gilberto Gil, Herbie Hancock o el mismisimo Eric Clapton.
Por desgracia, al ser un estilo de música culta no es un guitarrista muy bien entendido para las nuevas generaciones y para la industria musical; su música pertenece a un ámbito de erudición y público exclusivo, etiqueta de la que McLaughlin siempre ha intentado huir:

CURIOSIDADES
-Es uno de los músicos más prolíficos de los últimos tiempos, entre composiciones, discos conjuntos y participaciones con otros músicos; John ha firmado más de 1500 canciones. Su discografía asciende a la friolera de 38 discos y cuatro DVD.
- Pese a tener un dominio técnico que Miles Davis calificó de "sobrenatural", John siempre se ha centrado más en la transmisión y el apartado espiritual llegando a decir "la técnica es el vehiculo entre un sentimiento y otro, cuando voy hacia un sentimiento tengo que utilizar muchas notas hasta que encuentro una, dos o tres que me muestran la verdad de lo que andaba buscando". A medida que han pasado los años se ha ido alejando de su destacada velocidad, para llegar a cotas de sentimiento e interiorización máxima con varias canciones en las que la guitarra solo hace acordes.
-Es el único guitarrista que ha conseguido "darle miedo" a Paco de Lucía en su propio terreno. Ambos han llegado a decir del otro que es el mejor guitarrista.

En una ocasión tuve que decirle: mira John yo esto del jazz...es que no tengo ni puta idea. - Es uno de los precursores de la utilización de la guitarra midi y de sintetizadores aplicados a la guitarra; muchas veces en sus discos creemos estar escuchando un teclado y realmente es su guitarra.
- Posee algunas de las mejores guitarras de jazz del mundo; la más impactante es una gibson e-345 hecha a mano por la custom shop de esta marca, con el diapasón escalopeado en ébano (esto es muy, muy difícil de hacer; pues el ébano es muy poco moldeable)
-Tiene una velocidad de contrapúa de 15 notas por segundo
-Su maestría con la guitarra le hace manejar igualmente bien tanto guitarras eléctricas, como acústica y clásicas.
- Ha sido uno de los máximos exponentes de la fender mustang, guitarra que cada vez se ve menos dentro del jazz.
-con tan sólo 25 años ya era considerado uno de los mejores guitarristas de jazz del momento

Ha utilizado multitud de amplis; dede mesa boogie, pasando por vox, hasta gibson y fender.
Uno de los más utilizados es el desaparecido Steel King de fender,
también ha utilizado amplis fender twiwn reverb, gibson custom, etc.
Se le puede ver también en algunas fotos con un Marshall pero no he podido averiguar cuál es.
Últimamente no utiliza un ampli concreto sino que tiene su propio rack y dispositivos midi y de ahí directo a la mesa.

Biografia
John McLaughlin (nacido el 4 de enero de 1942), también Mahavishnu John McLaughlin, es un guitarrista de jazz extremadamente habilidoso nacido en Yorkshire, Inglaterra.John McLaughlin es uno de los más grandes guitarristas de la historia del Jazz y el Rock (considerado por muchos conocedores el mejor), y su primera banda, Mahavishnu Orchestra, ocupa dentro de ésta un sitial de honor, a pesar de su breve existencia.

Reconocido como el grupo fusión predominante, la Mahavishnu Orchestra fue considerada por muchos observadores durante sus inicios como una banda de rock, pero sus sofisticadas improvisaciones colocaron su poderosa música entre el rock y el jazz. La historia de esta legendaria agrupación, que fue como una estrella fugaz en el inmenso firmamento engendrado del bing bang musical ocurrido a finales de los 60’s, y que brilló con una intensidad inusitada durante su breve existencia de 5 años, está estrechamente ligada a la de su líder y fundador.
McLaughlin, nacido en 1942, arribó a Estados unidos procedente de Gran Bretaña a principios de 1969, siendo conocido solo en un selecto círculo de músicos y admiradores. A finales de ese año, era internacionalmente aclamado como intérprete. Al llegar se unió a un nuevo trío liderado por el prodigioso y talentoso Miles Davis y el baterista Tony Williams. Su contribución como músico y coautor en la banda fue determinante en la creación de un nuevo mundo musical, donde se fusionaba la exigente improvisación del jazz con el Rock’n’Roll, terrenos donde ninguna otra banda se había adentrado. Los dos años siguientes fueron de actividad sísmica musical, en el que se produjeron dos álbumes: In A Silent Way y Bitches Brew. Con esa experiencia y conocimientos adquiridos a cuestas, y su talento inigualable, John Mc Laughlin formó en 1971 la Mahavishnu Orchestra.

En esa época era discípulo del gurú hindú Sri Chinmoy, quien le antepuso el nombre de Mahavishnu. La primera formación, considerada la mejor de todas, estaba integrada además por Billy Cobham (batería y percusión), Jerry Goodman (violín), Jan Hammer (teclados) y Rick Laird (bajo).
Al poco tiempo la banda estaba tocando en grandes escenarios y estadios, con las bandas de rock de teloneros, y una audiencia de jazz y rock que respondía con éxtasis y admiración a un virtuosismo desgarrador, ensambles vertiginosos, pasajes tranquilos y relajantes, y melodías atonales y en clave menor, tomadas en gran parte de la India. Esta formación grabó durante 1971-73 tres intensos álbumes en estudio para la Columbia, y uno de los más potentes álbumes en vivo de todos los tiempos: Between Nothingness And Eternity. En el tercer disco, Love, Devotion And Surrender, McLaughlin colaboró con Devadish Carlos Santana, otro discípulo de Sri Chinmoy. Entonces, en un giro inesperado, McLaughlin reformó completamente la banda creando una segunda versión de ésta en 1974, con el violinista Jean-Luc Ponti, Gayle Moran (teclados y voz), el bajista Ralphe Amstrong y el baterista Narada Michael Warden, grabando dos álbumes. En 1975 Stu Goldberg remplazó a Moran y Ponti abandonó el grupo. Esta última encarnación de la banda grabó el célebre álbum Inner Worlds, antes del colapso definitivo, motivado por el acercamiento cada vez mayor de McLaughlin a la religión hindú y a la guitarra acústica. En 1975, McLaughlin formó con el violinista hindú Leo Shankar (hijo del celebre Ravi Shankar, maestro de la cítara) el quinteto acústico Shatki, estableciendo conexiones entre estilos acústicos y música de influencia hindú. Posteriormente, aún en la onda acústica, incursionó en el world music, particularmente en el flamenco-jazz, con el más celebre trío de guitarra que haya existido, incluyendo a Al Di Meola (Return To Forever) y Paco De Lucía.
Luego de girar y grabar con este trío, formó un dueto con la pianista Katia Labeque y grabó un disco solista en el que se reencontró con la guitarra eléctrica. Entonces, en 1984, surgió lo inevitable: renació la legendaria Mahavishnu Orchestra, con Cobham, el saxofonista Bill Evans, el tecladista Michael Forman, el bajista Jonas Hellborg y el percusionista Danny Gottlieb, grabando el último álbum de la banda: Mahavishnu, editado por la Warner Brother. Este intento de revivir las glorias pasadas fracasó, debido al escenario de mediocridad musical que invadió la década de los 80’s, impidiendo el desarrollo de la música virtuosa. A partir de entonces, John McLaughlin se dedicó a sus trabajos solistas, entre ellos el John McLaughlin Trio, colaboraciones con músicos de Jazz, y más recientemente la reunión del trio McLaughlin-Di Meola-De Lucia.
una de las cosas que más llama la atención de este hombre es que es completamente autodidacta, y además compone también líneas para piano, no sólo centra la composición en la guitarra.
Esta considerado por la élite del Jazz como uno de los mejores guitarristas jazz-fusión de la historia y un gran divulgador de este estilo.

Asímismo John McLaughlin es una persona muy cordial que siempre ha gustado de participar en todo cuanto le han propuesto, principalmente jam sessions y temas conjuntos. Algunas de sus participaciones más reseñadas, aparte del famoso trío, son con Chick Korea, Gilberto Gil, Herbie Hancock o el mismisimo Eric Clapton.
Por desgracia, al ser un estilo de música culta no es un guitarrista muy bien entendido para las nuevas generaciones y para la industria musical; su música pertenece a un ámbito de erudición y público exclusivo, etiqueta de la que McLaughlin siempre ha intentado huir:

CURIOSIDADES
-Es uno de los músicos más prolíficos de los últimos tiempos, entre composiciones, discos conjuntos y participaciones con otros músicos; John ha firmado más de 1500 canciones. Su discografía asciende a la friolera de 38 discos y cuatro DVD.
- Pese a tener un dominio técnico que Miles Davis calificó de "sobrenatural", John siempre se ha centrado más en la transmisión y el apartado espiritual llegando a decir "la técnica es el vehiculo entre un sentimiento y otro, cuando voy hacia un sentimiento tengo que utilizar muchas notas hasta que encuentro una, dos o tres que me muestran la verdad de lo que andaba buscando". A medida que han pasado los años se ha ido alejando de su destacada velocidad, para llegar a cotas de sentimiento e interiorización máxima con varias canciones en las que la guitarra solo hace acordes.
-Es el único guitarrista que ha conseguido "darle miedo" a Paco de Lucía en su propio terreno. Ambos han llegado a decir del otro que es el mejor guitarrista.

- Es uno de los precursores de la utilización de la guitarra midi y de sintetizadores aplicados a la guitarra; muchas veces en sus discos creemos estar escuchando un teclado y realmente es su guitarra.
- Posee algunas de las mejores guitarras de jazz del mundo; la más impactante es una gibson e-345 hecha a mano por la custom shop de esta marca, con el diapasón escalopeado en ébano (esto es muy, muy difícil de hacer; pues el ébano es muy poco moldeable)
-Tiene una velocidad de contrapúa de 15 notas por segundo
-Su maestría con la guitarra le hace manejar igualmente bien tanto guitarras eléctricas, como acústica y clásicas.
- Ha sido uno de los máximos exponentes de la fender mustang, guitarra que cada vez se ve menos dentro del jazz.
-con tan sólo 25 años ya era considerado uno de los mejores guitarristas de jazz del momento

utiliza la tecnología mac para grabarlo todo en su estudio.
Ha utilizado multitud de amplis; dede mesa boogie, pasando por vox, hasta gibson y fender.
Uno de los más utilizados es el desaparecido Steel King de fender,
también ha utilizado amplis fender twiwn reverb, gibson custom, etc.
Se le puede ver también en algunas fotos con un Marshall pero no he podido averiguar cuál es.
Últimamente no utiliza un ampli concreto sino que tiene su propio rack y dispositivos midi y de ahí directo a la mesa.
